News bits: Movie Theater Popcorn Prices Pop
Just when you thought it couldn’t get any worse. According to a story on NPR (http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=92529379&ft=1&f=1001), the cost of a bag of movie theater popcorn (pre-consumer) has increased by 50%. The reason? Rising fertilizer costs (the actual stuff, not what you see on the screen) and rising ethanol costs. A fifty pound bag of popcorn has gone from $12 at the start of the year to $18 today. AMC theaters in the US have already raised the price of their popcorn and other companies will likely follow suit. Before you start feeling too much sympathy for the poor, beleaguered, theater owner keep this fact in mind: According to the Nebraska Corn Board, an average $5.00 bucket ‘o popcorn contains around 3 cents of popcorn. Kinda makes the $4.00 cup of Starbucks coffee look like a bargain.
